Dan and Phyllis Petri began in their home in 1985. Dan trained with a professional skate sharpener named Joe DiLeo who serviced Olympic-level skaters in Colorado and purchased a grinding machine to set up shop in the basement. Customers would sit in their garage and chat with Phyllis while Dan serviced their skates. As time went on, customers would ask for laces, polish, tights, blade guards and covers, etc. Soon it was clear they had a store in their house. The business continued to grow for the next 6 years.
THE NEXT STEP
The Petris' store grew to the point where it became impractical to continue to run the business from their home. They opened their store at 174 Plaza Drive in Williamsville, NY. They continued to grow and established great relationships with local coaches, skaters, and skating clubs. In 2012, they relocated in the plaza to the present 126 Plaza Drive location. Through the years, many beginner skaters that visited the Petris accomplished wonderful goals. Some in skating, and some in professional careers. Skaters came to rely on Dan and Phyllis for advice, service, and supplies. The Cerras did so as well.
A NEW JOURNEY
Claire and Dawn Cerra became a skating family in 1999 with Claire's first steps on the ice. Dawn taught her as much as she knew from skating on frozen ponds, and then enrolled her in Learn to Skate lessons at the Amherst Skating Club. Claire's skating career took off in 2001 when she began private lessons. She found her niche in synchronized skating and her career took her to U.S. Nationals twice and she achieved her USFSA Gold in Moves before graduating from SUNY Oswego. Dawn was never far from the rink, transporting Claire to practice, attending and cheering at competitions, and managing the synchro team for five years.
When the Cerras heard about the Petri's impending retirement they worried about the future of skate specialists in Western New York. They are thrilled to learn from the Petris about skate sharpening and stocking inventory, and are ready to absorb everything the Petris can teach them. Claire and Dawn are both learning how to sharpen skates, mount blades, and stretch boots with all the proper technique and tips for providing quality service.
